Insider Packing Tips: What Savvy Travelers Always Bring (And You Should Too)
On our recent travels, I learned something that I wish I had figured out sooner: always pack a couple card games. After a long day of sightseeing, museum-hopping, and general touristing, all I want to do is wind down with a cocktail before bed. But sometimes, after spending all day with someone- talking, exploring, and sharing meals- even the best conversationalists need a break from more small talk. Playing a simple game while sipping a drink has been a surprisingly perfect way to relax together without needing to fill every silence. Whether it’s Uno, Monopoly Deal, or a simple deck of cards, it’s now a must-pack item for every trip.
That small lesson got me thinking about all the things that make travel smoother, more comfortable, and more fun. So here’s a comprehensive packing list to help you prepare for your next adventure, without the last-minute scramble.
Travel Documents
Staying organized with your essential documents makes everything else easier:
Passport (and UK ETA, if needed)
Driver’s License (especially for rentals)
Health Insurance Cards
HSA/FSA Card (for eligible medical expenses abroad)
Travel Insurance App downloaded
Hotel & Tour Confirmations (saved in your Notes app)
Itinerary (with addresses and reservation numbers)
Credit cards + backup card (notify your bank you're traveling)
Local currency (small bills for tips, taxis, etc.)
Entertainment
Having the right entertainment on hand can make flights, long drives, and downtime so much more enjoyable:
Tablets for kids and adults (fully charged)
Downloaded books, podcasts, shows, and games (Wi-Fi isn’t always reliable!)
Headphones (noise-canceling if possible)
Card games (Uno, Monopoly Deal, or a classic deck)
Chargers for all devices + power bank
Plug adapters and voltage converters (if traveling internationally)
Sticker and activity books for kids
Twistable colored pencils (no sharpener needed)
Eye mask and travel pillow for better rest
Health & Comfort
Travel can be tough on your body. You can stop-in to a local store to pick up what you need, but avoid any language barrier by bringing the essentials.
Hand sanitizer & sanitizing wipes
First aid kit (Band-aids, Advil, Tylenol, allergy meds, throat lozenges, blister pads)
Bug spray or bug wipes
Sunscreen (solid stick options are great for carry-ons)
Sleep aid (melatonin, Unisom, or your preferred supplement)
Snacks for your carry-on (nuts, protein bars, dried fruit)
Water bottle (collapsible or insulated)- fill it up after security and aim to drink a bottle before landing
Glasses, contact lenses, and sunglasses
Lip balm with SPF
Small tissue packs
Travel-size lotion (planes are dry!)
Compression socks (for long flights)
Clothing
Smart packing makes getting dressed easy no matter the weather or itinerary:
The Type-A side of me loves planning my outfits ahead of time. I create a list in my Notes app based on the weather forecast. It helps me build a travel capsule wardrobe that has enough variety so I don’t look the same in every picture, while still keeping my suitcase light and manageable.
Travel capsule wardrobe (mix-and-match pieces that fit the weather and your itinerary)
Pack layers: cardigans, lightweight jackets, scarves
Heavy coat and chunkiest shoes: wear them on the plane to save suitcase space
Swimsuit and swimsuit coverup (even if you think you won’t swim)
Comfortable walking shoes + one dressier pair
Sleepwear and lounge clothes
Undergarments and socks (always pack a few extras)
Packable rain jacket or small travel umbrella
Hat for sun protection
Use packing cubes to stay organized and optimize space
Other Items You’ll Be Glad You Brought
Ziplock bags (for wet clothes, snacks, or small electronics)
Travel-size stain remover stick
Small crossbody bag or belt bag for sightseeing
Bring a tote bag for souvenirs and shopping finds
Final Tip: Pack With a Strategy
Lay everything out before you pack, double-check your list, and do a final edit. You'll almost always find one or two things you can leave behind, and that extra space will come in handy when you inevitably find something you have to bring home.
Happy travels — and don’t forget the card games!
